19-4 42196 - Roamer "Military" Man's Wrist Watch

Thumbnail Image

Here is a collectable Roamer Military watch. This was issued to the forces of the Rhodesian Army during the conflict in the 1960's/70's. It has a 17 jewel manual wind Swiss Hack movement that has just been serviced so is running strong and keeping good time. The stainless case is unique as the whole middle part including the crystal comes out from the back to help with water resistance. Back of this one is marked RA2839. I think this was the way to keep track of who they issued these watches to. Original black dial with luminous numbers, white hands with luminous centers and silver sweep second hand . New black leather band. These were made in 1960's70's. and are not new old stock but serviced and repaired from watches that were actually used in the conflict. A horde of these has been discovered so they are becoming very collectable so here is your opportunity to have a nice one before they are all gone. Size is 35 mm from side to side not counting the winding crown and 40 mm from lug end. Please remember these were used watch and many were worn in combat so they are not perfect condition and may lose a minute or two each day. They are what they are.

The Roamer Military Watch Story

Years ago I purchased a large lot of Roamer watch parts from England where a Roamer Repair Company that repaired the Roamer watches that had problems and these were the watches issued to the army fighting in Rhodesia during the uprising of the 1960's/70's. I would guess that after the fighting ended there was no need for this company to continue so I was able to purchase all their stock. For some years now I have taken the best dials, best cases and movements and had my watchmaker service them. I have run into problems getting more original crystals, hands and some other parts but I still have hundreds of parts to continue making fine mostly original watches that were actually used in the conflict. Each one has the stamp number on the case back like RA for Rhodesia, ZA, SFA for South Africa and so on. This was a way to keep track of who the watch was issued to and some have more than one number so guess they were issued more than once. At one time someone was going to try to determine just how many of these were made and I furnished all the hundreds of numbers I had at that time but I have not seen the exact number as of yet. Anyway this is a piece of history and this watch has the number RA2839 on the back. I sure do not mean to be rude but this is what they are and they are used but still very nice. Maybe the sweep second hand is not original and same with the crystal and band but remember these were made from parts actually used in the war so they are what they are. Here is a chance to own one at a good price that has a story to tell.

Ken Cooper our best but only and most productive sales manager for the west coast now retired but formally a member of our US Army Top grade non commissioned officer that can be attained and we thank him for his many years service. We all salute you Ken... Anyway here is what he says is history of this military wrist watch.

In the late winter of 1948 Sergeant Ace Megestrolly reported into his new duty station at Camp Amiot deep in the hills of a very Southern state.  Ace was issued this new 1948 Bulova watch as he processed through the unit's supply room.  Sergeant Megestrolly was made the NCOIC of the post's mess kit repair division.  As his commander Major Notsacks made clear to him this job was important and needed stern leadership as most of his soldiers were rejects from other units and were one step away from a "bad paper" discharge.  Taking charge with a force of energy Ace soon had the mess kit repair division running at 100%.  Morning formations, fitness training with a 2 mile run daily and rifle marksmanship training every quarter made the men feel like soldiers.  Every month SGT Megestrolly announced who was the "Soldier of the Month" and the unit had a big beer bust that night.  In June 1950 war broke out in Korea and Ace Megestrolly was one of the first to volunteer for combat duty but alas he was told his duties running the mess kit repair division were too important to release him.  He paid great attention in these years to keeping his Army issued Bulova maintained properly and when he retired 15 years later, still at Camp Amiot & now a Staff Sergeant, his commander presented his well maintained Bulova watch to him as a retirement gift from the Camp and the men of the mess kit repair division.  Ace moved to the West Coast of the United States and had a very comfortable job working as a bank guard & handyman.  As he entered his "Twilight Years" he moved into Porter's Rest and Funeral Home to live out his remaining years.  He sold his military Bulova watch, still running like a top, to Girard's Watches with instructions that even though the Bulova never saw combat it was and is a rugged veteran of military service. Girard has placed it at an attractive price and smiles when he thinks of all the work & skill it took to keep mess kits properly repaired. When purchasing this Bulova timepiece ask about Girard's unique & customer tailored lay away plan.

Ken Cooper our best but only west coast sales manager is always right when he has to say about our listings so tell me what you think ?

Patrolman Dan "Handy" Dandy was new to law enforcement and upon reporting to his first assignment he knew he needed a classy, rugged timepiece. At the "Slumlord's Surplus Watch Shack" store he spotted a great looking used Bulova military timepiece and when he was told it had seen military service he knew this was it.  The watch looked exciting and with his new watch on he set out to be the best officer on the force.  Time passed and newly promoted Sergeant Dandy was sent to the big city as a Patrol Sergeant.   From the far reaches of Feline Alley of the city and to the deep harbor on the outskirts of the city, Sgt Dandy fought many battles with the criminal element of this crime ridden city, while his combat military Bulova kept the time faithfully on his massive wrist.  With many awards for valor and a promotion to Chief of Police he served over 40 years.  Upon retirement he moved to the old family farm where he settled in and became a country squire and had his combat proven Bulova time piece cleaned, oiled, and regulated every 3 years.  In fact, the Bulova was being serviced, when Dan Dandy eating a  rich jelly doughnut slipped on the moss on his front porch and fell on top of an angry copperhead snake which bit him over and over.  Barely alive & breaking wind loudly, he crawled towards the fields where his farm hands were singing songs about what a horse's rear end he was, and sadly he was run over by a large tractor driven by newly hired Mr. Shitega Aota.  Chief Dan Dandy was buried with full honors and his estate sold his Bulova  wrist watch to a Mr. Girard Sensoli.  Somewhere you just know that Chief Dan "Handy" Dandy (Retired) will be proud once his beloved combat proven Bulova watch has a new owner.   Ask about Girard's lay away plan when purchasing this proven in war & peace Bulova timepiece.
